Paul Edwards, "Castle Island"
Castle Island is an island only about 3 acres in size that is home to a fishing camp that has been in the Castle Family for many decades. It is a simple down home place in Maine where solace and escape can be found from our hectic lives. I was never big into fishing but there is something extremely restful about this place that draws me back every few years.
I was up very early this morning listening to the loons calling and decided to take a walk with my camera hoping to capture the tranquil essence of this place. As the sun began to rise, the warming air met the cool water temperatures causing a fine fog to rise. I didn't have a tripod with me so I braced the camera on a fence by the waters edge. The high contrasted scene suggested bracketing my shots to attain the best exposure. I also moved about trying different variations on the scene using various stationary objects to stabilize my camera. I also used a polarizing filter on my lens to control glare. I used a Pentax ist DS SLR camera with a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro lens at about 28mm. The entire foggy scene was gone within 20 minutes, the rest of the island's residents woke to a beautiful sunny day.
