March 2009: Slide Competition
Category: Animals
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  22.1
Image Number:
Title: Korean Farmer
Maker: Tom Wootton
This shot is in remarkable condition for being over 50 years old (Kodachrome ASA 8).  But on top of that it’s a fine composition and a warm human story

Feb 2009: Slide Competition
Category: Monuments
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  23.2
Image Number:
Title: Bennington Monument
Maker: Tom Wootton
A straight-on shot of a monument familiar to New Englanders.  Good sky , a bit of a lead-in line.  Side lighting shows off the surface texture very well

Jan 2009: Slide Competition
Category: Open
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  23.5
Image Number:
Title: Barn #1
Maker: Irma Wootton

Well composed , the hedge and a thin strip of grass make a more interesting foreground than just grass or just the hedge would have.  Good color saturation.  The little bits of wispy cloud break up an otherwise empty sky

Dec 2008: Slide Competition
Category: Flowers
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  24.2
Image Number:
Title: SunFlower and Bee
Maker: Irma Wootton
Excellent close-up of a strong subject.  Brilliant color.  Sharp all over including the bees.  Well composed. Just enough of the petals to show we are looking at a sunflower without losing the detail of the main central area.

Oct 2008: Slide Competition
Category: Nature
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  24.9
Image Number:
Title: Natural Setting
Maker: Bill Barber
A fine image of a butterfly with random leaf patterns forming a very pleasing frame.  The subject placement is fairly close to the rule-of-thirds.  The butterfly’s slight deviation from the horizontal, facing into the center of the picture, is also a positive compositional element

Sept 2008: Slide Competition
Category: Open
Awarded: 1st Place
Points Awarded:  23.1
Image Number:
Title: Springtime Cappadoccia
Maker: Robert Keslow
Since the commentator is also the maker, no self-praise, but the presence of flowers is always helpful in a scenic shot, particularly one like this where the landscape is spectacular, but not very colorful.   The photographer made use of Hyperfocal Distance, a technique for maximizing depth-of-field.  If you are not familiar with this technique, try a web search, or talk to an experienced photographer.  It seems complicated at first, but is fairly simple and very useful, much easier to explain with a scene in front of you and camera in hand
